Picco, the Sardinian Minstrel - from a photograph by John Watkins, 1856. Creator: Unknown
Picco, the Sardinian Minstrel - from a photograph by John Watkins, 1856. This young man, who has been astonishing the...musical world by his performances on an instrument of the humblest possible kind - has...had a concert at the Hanover-square Room...when the effects which he produced by means of his poor little instrument were at once so marvellous and so beautiful that a large audience...were filled with wonder and delight...the son of a Piedmontese shepherd, blind from his birth, and destitute of any musical education...his extraordinary attainments were discovered by accident. A sportsman, wandering among the Apennines, was struck by hearing...a singular strain of music, and found that it proceeded from a country lad, playing on the rude instrument we have mentioned. [His father]...was persuaded to allow his son to be taken to Milan, with the view of making something by his talent'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Picco, the Sardinian Minstrel, in a moment of profound concentration as he plays his humble instrument, enchanting his audience with its marvellous and beautiful melodies. The young man, whose identity remains unknown, had astonished musical circles with his extraordinary performances at the Hanover-square Room in London during the 1850s. Born blind and the son of a Piedmontese shepherd, Picco's musical education was limited, yet his talent was discovered by chance. A sportsman, wandering through the Apennines, was captivated by an unusual strain of music and traced its source to a country lad playing on a simple instrument. Recognizing the potential in Picco's unique abilities, his father was persuaded to allow him to be taken to Milan with the hope of making a living from his talent. The photograph, taken by the renowned English photographer John Watkins in 1856, immortalizes a moment in the life of this remarkable musician, whose music transcended the limitations of his humble beginnings and captivated audiences with its enchanting melodies.
