Ovation to the first Garibaldian who entered the Café di Europa, Naples... 1860. Creator: Unknown

Ovation to the first Garibaldian who entered the Cafe di Europa, Naples - from a sketch by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860. Although Garibaldi himself arrived in the capital of the Two Sicilies on Friday, Sept. 7, the first of his followers, with the exception of a few of his personal staff, did not reach Naples until three days afterwards. One of these, in the historic red shirt, entered the Cafe di Europa to procure some refreshment, and to escape the crowd which was pressing on him in the street, when, to his surprise, he found himself suddenly hoisted on the shoulders of some half-dozen enthusiastic Neapolitans who bore him in triumph round the cafe'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled 'Ovation to the first Garibaldian who entered the Café di Europa, Naples - from a sketch by our special artist, Frank Vizetelly, 1860,' transports us back to the pivotal moment of the Risorgimento, the Italian Unification movement. The image depicts an enthusiastic welcome given to a Garibaldian soldier, the first to arrive in Naples, Italy, following Giuseppe Garibaldi's successful expedition of the Thousand. Garibaldi himself had entered Naples on September 7, 1860, but the first of his followers, with the exception of a few personal staff, did not reach the city until three days later. One of these brave soldiers, dressed in the iconic red shirt, sought refuge from the throngs of people in the Cafe di Europa. To his astonishment, he was suddenly lifted up by a group of jubilant Neapolitans and carried in triumph around the cafe. The print, published in the Illustrated London News, captures the essence of this spontaneous celebration, with the soldier at the center, surrounded by men in various stages of excitement – some cheering, others wearing hats, and a few even carrying top hats in the air. The interior of the cafe, with its ornate decor and dimly lit atmosphere, provides a stark contrast to the lively scene unfolding outside. Francis Vizetelly, the special artist for the Illustrated London News, skillfully captured this historic moment, offering a glimpse into the emotions and excitement that accompanied the unification of Italy. The print serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit of unity and the transformative power of popular support in shaping history.
