The Old Willow at a Brook, 1794. Creator: Georg von Dillis (German, 1759-1841)

The Old Willow at a Brook, 1794. After an initial phase of classically influenced landscape painting, Dilliss work achieved a newfound naturalism and freedom. He based this close-up view of a thicket on direct observation of nature. Dilliss dense network of lines form a filigree-like pattern of trees and foliage. One of only two etchings that Dillis published during his lifetime, this informal composition and its loose style reveal the influence of Jacob van Ruisdael, a Dutch landscapist of the 17th century. In addition to being an artist, Dillis was an outstanding connoisseur and assembled a large print collection of his own. He became one of the first great German museum directors whose impact on the history of art was enormous

The Old Willow at a Brook, 1794

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print created by Georg von Dillis, a renowned German artist of the late 18th century. This particular artwork showcases Dillis' transition from classical landscape painting to a more naturalistic and liberated style. Inspired by direct observations of nature, Dillis meticulously captures the essence of a thicket in this close-up view. The print reveals an intricate network of lines that intricately weave together trees and foliage, forming an exquisite filigree-like pattern. It is interesting to note that this informal composition and loose style bear the influence of Jacob van Ruisdael, a prominent Dutch landscapist from the 17th century. Aside from being an exceptional artist, Dillis was also an avid connoisseur who amassed his own extensive collection of prints. His passion for art led him to become one of Germany's first great museum directors, leaving behind an enormous impact on the history of art. This etching is one among only two published during Dillis' lifetime, making it even more significant. The Cleveland Museum of Art proudly houses this remarkable piece as part of its heritage collection.
