He ecaped in 1815, raised another army, but was finally defeated by Wellington at Waterloo, and exiled again to St Helena

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph captures the formidable presence of Napoleon I Bonaparte, Emperor of France from 1804. The artist, Delpech, skillfully portrays the military leader in his iconic military uniform, adorned with epaulettes that symbolize his rank and power. Napoleon's rise to prominence was nothing short of extraordinary. Starting as a soldier in the French Revolutionary army, he quickly climbed through the ranks and eventually led a coup to overthrow the government in 1799. This marked the beginning of his reign as first consul and effective dictator of France. In 1804, Napoleon declared himself Emperor and embarked on a series of ambitious military campaigns across Europe known as the Napoleonic Wars. His victories at Austerlitz and Jena solidified France's dominance over much of the continent. However, Napoleon's fortunes took a turn for the worse when he invaded Russia in 1812. Defeat at Leipzig in 1813 forced him to abdicate and go into exile on Elba. Despite this setback, he managed to escape in 1815 but was ultimately defeated by Wellington at Waterloo. This print serves as a reminder of Napoleon's complex legacy - an influential statesman who reshaped European politics while also being remembered for his ambition and ultimate downfall.
