Mrs. North and Her Attorney, 1864. Artist: John Tenniel

Mrs. North and Her Attorney, 1864. Mrs North says: You see, Mr. Lincoln, we have failed utterly in our course of Action; I want Peace, and so, if you cannot effect an Amicable Arrangement, I must put the Case into Other Hands. A miserable President Lincoln is being told by Mrs North that the Civil War must be brought to an end. Recently, McClellan was nominated to stand against Lincoln for the Democratic candidacy, and that is why Mrs North says that if Lincoln cannot bring the matter to a conclusion, she will have to instruct somebody else - rather in the manner of instructing a different solicitor to sort out a civil matter without recourse to legal action. In fact, though, McClellans nomination led to a split in the party between those for continuing the war, and those advocating peace, and this divergence led to Lincolns re-election. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 24, 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Mrs. North and Her Attorney, 1864" we witness a powerful moment between President Abraham Lincoln and Mrs. North during the American Civil War. The artist, John Tenniel, skillfully captures the essence of their conversation through his satirical caricature. Mrs. North's frustration is palpable as she expresses her desire for peace to President Lincoln. She informs him that their course of action has failed utterly, leaving her no choice but to seek an amicable arrangement elsewhere if he cannot bring an end to the war. The timing of this encounter is significant as it coincides with McClellan's nomination against Lincoln for the Democratic candidacy. This political development further intensifies Mrs. North's plea for resolution. Interestingly, McClellan's nomination creates a rift within the party between those advocating for peace and those supporting continued warfare. This divergence ultimately contributes to Lincoln's re-election as president. The image portrays President Lincoln in a state of misery upon hearing Mrs. North's words, highlighting the immense burden he carries as leader during such tumultuous times. Through clever symbolism such as papers scattered on his desk and a wastepaper basket nearby, Tenniel conveys both the weightiness of decision-making and potential consequences associated with ending or prolonging the war. This thought-provoking engraving serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by leaders during times of conflict and highlights Abraham Lincoln’s pivotal role in shaping America’s history during one its most trying periods - The American Civil War.
