EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the young prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performing for Empress Maria Theresia of Austria. Taken on 1 October 1762 at the imperial court in Vienna, this image showcases the immense talent and charm possessed by Mozart even at such a tender age. The six-year-old musical genius is seen seated at a harpsichord, his small hands gracefully dancing across the keys as he captivates not only the empress but also everyone present in the room. The atmosphere is filled with awe and admiration as Mozart's melodies fill the air. Legend has it that during this performance, Mozart's enthusiasm got the better of him. Overwhelmed by his own brilliance or perhaps simply caught up in his youthful exuberance, he couldn't resist jumping onto Empress Maria Theresia's lap while playing. This unexpected act surely brought smiles to all those witnessing this extraordinary encounter between royalty and prodigious talent. Preserved within an album titled "Bilder Deutscher Geschichte" (Pictures of German History), published by Cigaretten-Bilderdienst in Hamburg, Germany in 1936; this photograph serves as a testament to both Mozart's incredible skill and his ability to captivate audiences from an early age. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded of Mozart's lasting impact on classical music and how even as a child he was able to leave an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to witness his performances.
