EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Madonna Del Gran Duca" painted by Raphael in 1505. The artwork, displayed in the Galleria Palatina in Florence, Italy, derives its name from Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who owned it. Raphael was an Italian High Renaissance painter and architect known for his extensive body of work despite his premature death at the age of 37. Spending time both in Florence and Rome working for two Popes, he left a profound impact on the art world. Raphael's oeuvre encompasses frescoes, oil paintings depicting religious and mythological themes, portraits, and architectural plans such as those for St Peter's Basilica in Rome. Regarded as one of the most significant artists of his era, his masterpieces are held in esteemed museums worldwide. This particular illustration is taken from "Raphael - Masterpieces in Colour" a book authored by Paul G Konody around 1912. It beautifully captures the essence of this iconic painting that portrays Mary with baby Jesus—a timeless symbol of motherhood and Christianity. With its vibrant colors and exquisite details brought to life through oil paint techniques employed by Raphael himself centuries ago, this print serves as a testament to the enduring legacy left behind by this revered artist.
