Lotus-blossom petal canopy, 1500s-early 1600s. Creator: Unknown
Lotus-blossom petal canopy, 1500s-early 1600s. This is the most spectacular early Indian silk that has survived, dating from the 16th century during the Muslim Sultanate period. Six concentric circles of lotus petals alternate with foliate motifs while mythical fighting animals-a green eight-legged creature attacking a yellow hybrid-lion-enliven the corners, all framed by a sinuous leaf border in brilliant colours. The imagery reflects a pan-Indian style with Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim elements. This rare silk appears to be the central section of a larger canopy. The interrupted border pattern suggests there was additional fabric at each end. Luxurious canopies were essential accouterments of rulers, displayed as conspicuous symbols of power and wealth while also providing welcome shade

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Lotus-blossom petal canopy dating back to the 1500s-early 1600s, created by an unknown artist. Considered as one of the most remarkable surviving early Indian silks, this piece originates from the 16th century during the Muslim Sultanate period. The exquisite design features six concentric circles of lotus petals intermingled with intricate foliate motifs. Adding a touch of mystique are mythical fighting animals - a green eight-legged creature engaging in combat with a yellow hybrid-lion - embellishing each corner. All these elements are framed by a sinuous leaf border adorned in vibrant colors. The imagery portrayed on this rare silk reflects a pan-Indian style that incorporates influences from Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. Although it appears to be only the central section of what was once part of a larger canopy, its interrupted border pattern suggests there were additional fabric sections at each end. During ancient times, luxurious canopies held great significance as essential accessories for rulers. They were proudly displayed as conspicuous symbols of power and wealth while also providing much-needed shade from the scorching sun. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection, this lampas silk is an extraordinary testament to India's rich artistic heritage and cultural diversity. Its intricate craftsmanship and fusion of different religious traditions make it an invaluable artifact that continues to captivate viewers today.
