The Forum, Rome, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
The Forum, Rome, c1950. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print of "The Forum, Rome, c1950" by Shirley Markham takes us back in time to the bustling streets of ancient Rome. The image beautifully captures the grandeur and architectural marvels of this historic city. Markham's artistic talent shines through as she skillfully brings to life the intricate details of the classical buildings. Markham was a gifted artist who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London under renowned tutor Mervyn Peake. Her style was influenced by esteemed British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. During her time in Italy, she explored the Dolomite Mountains and visited Rome, where she sketched these timeless landmarks. Despite her promising career as a graphic designer and illustrator producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus, and programmes; societal expectations prevailed during that era. In 1957 when she got married, it became customary for middle-class women to focus solely on raising children and managing household duties. Sadly, Markham lacked confidence to pursue her passion further. For many years her remarkable portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic until now when we have the privilege to witness her incredible work for the first time. This print not only showcases Markham's exceptional talent but also serves as a reminder of how societal norms can hinder individuals from fully embracing their creative potential.
