Erechtheion, Athens, Greece, c1920s-c1930s(?)
Erechtheion, Athens, Greece, c1920s-c1930s(?). The Erechtheion is an ancient Greek temple on the Acropolis of Athens in Greece, that was built in honour of the legendary King Erechtheus. The temple as seen today was built between 421-407 BC, and its architect may have been Mnesicles. On the north side, there is a large porch with columns, and on the south, the famous Porch of the Maidens, with six draped female figures known as caryatids (meaning: Maidens of Karyae ) as supporting columns, each sculpted in a manner different from the rest and engineered in such a way that their slenderest part, the neck, is capable of supporting the weight of the porch roof whilst remaining graceful and feminine. The Acropolis of Athens was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print transports us back in time to the ancient city of Athens, Greece, during the 1920s or 1930s. The focal point of this image is the majestic Erechtheion temple, situated on the iconic Acropolis hill. Built between 421-407 BC, this remarkable structure was dedicated to King Erechtheus and designed by possibly Mnesicles. The photograph showcases two distinct features of the temple. On its north side stands a grand porch adorned with towering columns, while on its south side lies the renowned Porch of the Maidens. This extraordinary section boasts six intricately sculpted female figures known as caryatids, each uniquely crafted yet harmoniously supporting the weight of the porch roof with their delicate necks. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, we are reminded that these ruins hold immense historical significance. In recognition of its cultural importance and architectural brilliance, UNESCO declared the Acropolis of Athens a World Heritage Site in 1987. Through this monochrome composition captured by an unknown creator and preserved by The Print Collector collection, we can appreciate both the grandeur and delicacy embodied within ancient Greek architecture. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and artistic mastery that has endured for centuries amidst changing landscapes and civilizations.
