EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print captures a pivotal moment in history - the submission of the Saxons to Charlemagne, King of the Franks, in 777. Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was a powerful ruler who sought to expand his kingdom and spread Christianity throughout neighboring lands. In this scene, we see Charlemagne mounted on his majestic horse, clad in regal attire and holding a shield symbolizing his authority. The defeated Saxons stand before him, surrendering their weapons and acknowledging his victory. The battlefield behind them serves as a reminder of the fierce battles that took place during this campaign. Charlemagne's triumph over the Saxons marked an important turning point in European history. It solidified his position as a monarch and paved the way for the establishment of the Holy Roman Empire. His efforts to convert conquered territories to Christianity had far-reaching consequences for religion and culture across Europe. This chromolithograph print beautifully captures both the grandeur of Charlemagne's reign and the significance of this historical event. It is not only a testament to military conquest but also reflects religious fervor and political ambition. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness an extraordinary moment when one man's determination shaped an entire continent's destiny.
