EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Battle of the Pyramids, 21 June, 1798" by Francois Georgin depicts a pivotal moment in history. Trudging towards Cairo, Napoleon Bonaparte and his formidable army faced off against two forces of Mamelukes under Murad and Ibrahim Bey. The French soldiers formed themselves into squares covered by 30 guns, displaying their unwavering determination as they fended off sustained attacks from the Mamelukes. In this intense battle scene, we witness the bravery and skill of both sides. The Egyptian defenders in the village fought valiantly but found themselves isolated and ultimately overwhelmed by a brutal assault from Bonaparte's forces. As a result, more than 5000 Mameluke warriors were killed or wounded while Bonaparte's Army of the Orient suffered losses amounting to only 300 men. The victory at the Pyramids secured Lower Egypt for France; however, Admiral Horatio Nelson's triumph on the Nile dashed any hopes Napoleon had for further conquests. This historic event marked a turning point in both military strategy and political aspirations. Francois Georgin masterfully captures this significant moment through his wood engraving technique. The use of color adds depth to the artwork while highlighting key elements such as weaponry and military uniforms. This print serves as a testament to not only Napoleon Bonaparte's leadership but also to the courage displayed by all those involved in this fierce battle that shaped history forever.
