Battle and crossing of Bridge of Lodi, 11 May, 1796. Artist: Francois Georgin

Battle and crossing of Bridge of Lodi, 11 May, 1796. It was at the Battle of Lodi that Napoleon Bonaparte proved himself to his men and won the nickname The Little Corporal. The French were trying to trap General Beaulieus Austrians but tardiness allowed the enemy to escape across the Adda River to safety. Beaulieu left behind a 10, 000-strong force at Lodi to delay any French pursuit and when Bonapartes men arrived they found the defenders in a strong position and the vital bridge swept by cannon and musket fire. Bonaparte himself sighted the French artillery pieces - usually the job for an artillery corporal - and pinned down the Austrians with accurate fire while an assault was organised. A determined and costly charge by General Massena, combined with flanking crossings further along the river, forced the Austrian rearguard to retreat towards the fortress at Mantua. Both sides lost about 2000 men at Lodi

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Battle and crossing of Bridge of Lodi, which took place on 11 May 1796. Painted by the talented artist Francois Georgin, this artwork vividly portrays the moment that would forever change Napoleon Bonaparte's destiny. It was during this battle that Napoleon proved his mettle to his men and earned the nickname "The Little Corporal". The French forces aimed to trap General Beaulieu's Austrians, but due to their tardiness, the enemy managed to escape across the Adda River to safety. However, Beaulieu left behind a formidable force of 10,000 soldiers at Lodi in order to delay any pursuit from the French. Upon arrival at Lodi, Bonaparte's troops found themselves facing a well-fortified position with a heavily defended bridge under constant cannon and musket fire. Displaying exceptional leadership skills and bravery beyond measure, Bonaparte personally manned the artillery pieces while directing accurate fire towards the Austrians. A determined charge led by General Massena combined with flanking crossings along the river eventually forced the Austrian rearguard into retreat towards Mantua fortress. The Battle of Lodi resulted in significant casualties for both sides, with approximately 2,000 men lost. Francois Georgin masterfully captured this pivotal moment in history through his artistic lens. This print serves as a testament not only to Napoleon's military prowess but also highlights one of many battles that shaped Europe's future under his rule.
