The Apocalypse: St. John on the Island of Patmos, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French
The Apocalypse: St. John on the Island of Patmos, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Apocalypse: St. John on the Island of Patmos" a remarkable work of art created by Jean Duvet between 1546 and 1556. The print is part of a bound volume that illustrates the narrative of the Apocalypse, derived from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. With its intricate engravings, this series took Duvet several years to complete and stands as his greatest artistic accomplishment. Considered one of France's pioneering printmakers during the 16th century, Jean Duvet was renowned for his originality and talent. Although primarily based in Langres, a provincial city, he drew inspiration from Italian art through prints circulating at the time, particularly those by Marcantonio Raimondi. This influence is evident in Duvet's skillful depiction of human figures with solid modeling reminiscent of the Italian High Renaissance. However, what truly sets Duvet apart is his idiosyncratic style characterized by crowded compositions that disregard rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns. This distinctive approach adds an intriguing depth to his artwork and invites viewers to explore every intricate detail within each engraving. The print presented here captures not only Duvet's exceptional craftsmanship but also offers a glimpse into his imaginative interpretation of St. John on Patmos Island during apocalyptic times. It serves as a testament to both Duvet's artistic prowess and his contribution to French Renaissance art history.
