The Annunciation, c. 1457. Creator: Jaume Ferrer (Spanish, 1460 / 70)

The Annunciation, c. 1457. This is believed to be the one of two remaining components of a six-panel altarpiece. The large central panel is now preserved in Barcelona (Museu National d Art de Catalunya). Ferrer collaborated with the painter Pere Garcia de Benavarri on this commission. Spanish works like these often feature elaborate treatment of the gold background, evident here in the exuberant raised decoration (called pastiglia) in the skies and the haloes, as well as other details. Here the Archangel Gabriel proclaims the Virgins destiny as the mother of Christ. The setting is an ordinary house, but simple objects have symbolic meaning. The lilies represent the Virgins purity; the covered jar and water carafe symbolize inviolability; the pomegranate symbolizes Christs resurrection, while the apple alludes to humankinds fall from grace. The two books, closed and open, refer respectively to the Old and New Testaments: one foretelling and the other fulfilling the promise of the messiah

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Annunciation" by Jaume Ferrer, a Spanish artist from the late 15th century. Believed to be one of two remaining components of a six-panel altarpiece, this particular piece is an exquisite representation of religious art during that era. The central panel of this altarpiece is now carefully preserved in Barcelona's Museu National d'Art de Catalunya, while this print captures the essence and intricate details of Ferrer's collaboration with painter Pere Garcia de Benavarri. Spanish artworks often feature elaborate treatment of gold backgrounds, as seen here through the exuberant raised decoration known as pastiglia on the skies and haloes. The Archangel Gabriel takes center stage in proclaiming the Virgin Mary's destiny as the mother of Christ within an ordinary house setting. Every object depicted holds symbolic meaning: lilies symbolize purity; a covered jar and water carafe represent inviolability; a pomegranate signifies Christ's resurrection; and an apple alludes to humankind's fall from grace. Additionally, two books are featured - one closed representing the Old Testament foretelling the promise of a messiah, while another open book represents fulfillment through the New Testament. This print beautifully captures not only Ferrer's artistic prowess but also provides insight into religious symbolism prevalent during that time period. It serves as a testament to heritage and history for those who appreciate fine art and its profound messages.
