Aliens Order, Certificate of Registration, 1920
The Aliens Order 1920 was a statutory instrument made under the 1919 Aliens Restriction Act. Brought out during widespread unemployment after the First World War it required all aliens seeking employment or residence to register with the police. The Order drew its powers from the 1919 Act and granted a wide ranging discretion to the Home Secretary. It stated that no alien might land without the permission of an immigration officer. The order also granted powers to attach conditions to the grant of leave, to refuse those who could not support themselves, and their dependants, those medically unfit and those convicted of crimes abroad. It restricted the employment rights of aliens resident in Britain, barring them from certain jobs such as the civil service

EDITORS COMMENTS
This close-up print captures a significant historical document, the "Aliens Order, Certificate of Registration, 1920". This certificate holds great importance as it was issued under the Aliens Restriction Act of 1919 during a period of widespread unemployment following the First World War. The order mandated that all aliens seeking employment or residence in Britain had to register with the police. The Aliens Order drew its authority from the 1919 Act and granted extensive discretion to the Home Secretary. It stipulated that no alien could land without permission from an immigration officer. Moreover, it empowered officials to attach conditions to granting leave and refuse entry to those unable to support themselves or their dependents, medically unfit individuals, and those convicted of crimes abroad. Additionally, it restricted employment rights for aliens residing in Britain by barring them from certain jobs such as civil service positions. This document serves as a reminder of how global conflicts can shape immigration policies and impact individuals' lives. It reflects both the challenges faced by nations after World War I and their efforts to regulate immigration amidst economic uncertainty. Preserved through time, this official certificate showcases meticulous lettering characteristic of early twentieth-century documents. As we examine this print closely, we are transported back in time—immersing ourselves in an era marked by war's aftermath and societal restrictions imposed on foreign residents seeking opportunities in Britain.
