An Act of Grace; Montalbert Pardons the Emperor, 1859

An Act of Grace; Montalbert Pardons the Emperor, 1859. The story behind the cartoon is the trial of the Comte de Montalembert. The Comte had published a pamphlet called Un Debat sur l Inde au Parlement Anglais in which he compared in unflattering terms French parliamentary procedures for debate with the superior ones of the British parliament. Napoleon was outraged. For this crime, Montalembert was found guilty, fined 3, 000 francs and sentenced to six months imprisonment. In December, he was pardoned by Napoleon, but when Montalembert appealed against his conviction, he was again found guilty. Towards the end of December, he was again pardoned by Napoleon. Here, Montalembert is shown forgiving Napoleon for having saved him from prison. Napoleon kneels in front of Montalembert as though he is to be knighted by a British sovereign and, with a rolled up copy of the offending pamphlet, Montalembert prepares to oblige. From Punch, or the London Charivari, January 8, 1859

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "An Act of Grace; Montalbert Pardons the Emperor, 1859" captures a significant moment in history. The image depicts Comte de Montalembert forgiving Napoleon Bonaparte III for saving him from imprisonment. The story behind this cartoon dates back to the trial of Comte de Montalembert, who had published a pamphlet criticizing French parliamentary procedures compared to those of the British parliament. Outraged by the comparison, Napoleon sentenced Montalembert to six months imprisonment and fined him 3,000 francs. However, in December, Napoleon granted him a pardon. Nevertheless, when Montalembert appealed against his conviction later on, he was once again found guilty. Towards the end of December, he received another pardon from Napoleon. In this intriguing image captured by an unknown creator and featured in Punch or the London Charivari on January 8th, 1859, we witness an unusual scene unfold before us. We see Montalembert graciously forgiving Napoleon as if knighting a British sovereign would do so with utmost respect and honor. Holding a rolled-up copy of his controversial pamphlet that caused all these events to transpire in his hand ready for disposal. This photograph serves as a reminder of both political tensions and acts of clemency during this period in history. It invites viewers to contemplate power dynamics and forgiveness within political systems while highlighting one man's ability to rise above resentment towards his captor.
