EDITORS COMMENTS
The Union-Castle Liner Rhodesia Castle, captured in this stunning photograph, stands proudly in the King George V Dock in London on 12th October 1951. Built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, this majestic vessel boasted a tonnage of 17041grt and measured an impressive length of 576ft 5in with a beam of 74ft 3in. With a service speed of 17.5 knots, she was designed for the Round Africa service, replacing her predecessor Llanstephan Castle. In an effort to enhance her appearance and functionality, Rhodesia Castle underwent modifications throughout her years of service. In 1958, her funnel was heightened and fitted with a dome top. Following two cruises out of Southampton, she took over from Dunnottar Castle as the new flagship. A significant remodel occurred in 1960 when accommodations were redesigned to comfortably house up to 442 one-class passengers. However, despite these improvements, Rhodesia Castle's journey eventually came to an end on May 4th, 1967 when she was laid up in the River Blackwater before being sent off to Kaohsiung for breaking up by Chin Ho Fa Steel & Iron Co. This image captures not only the grandeur and elegance that defined Rhodesia Castle but also serves as a testament to its historical significance within transportation history. The photo showcases the ship's imposing presence against the backdrop of London's dockyard while evoking nostalgia for an era long gone.
