EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a glimpse into the 17th-century world of heraldry and nobility. Taken from a copperplate engraving, this image is part of Richard Blome's Britannia atlas, published in 1673. The roll of arms featured in this work honors individuals who contributed to its completion, starting with King Charles II. Displayed on each page are pairs of coats of arms, with this particular snapshot capturing two distinct emblems from folio 23. It is important to note that during that era, the letter "s" was often represented as "f" while "ss" appeared as "fs". Additionally, abbreviations were commonly used; for instance, "com" stood for county. The first coat of arms (numbered 760) belongs to the esteemed Sir Robert Ridgeway. He held various titles including Knight and Baron and was known as the Earl of Londonderry and Baron of Gallen-Ridgeway. His residences spanned Torre in Devon County and Ballinakill in Queens County, Ireland. The second coat of arms (numbered 761) represents Thomas Chafin (Chaffin), an individual hailing from Chettle in Dorset County. Notably differentiating him from any commercial entity sharing his name. Preserved through time by Whiteway's meticulous craftsmanship, this print offers us a window into history—a testament to the intricate artistry and social hierarchy prevalent during the illustrious 17th century.
