EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring moment when Archangel Michael appeared to Joan of Arc in her father's garden. At just 13 years old, Joan was a young teenager who claimed to hear voices of saints and angels, including Saint Margaret the Virgin, Catherine of Alexandria, and Archangel Michael himself. These divine messages inspired her to lead the French army during the tumultuous Hundred Years War against English occupation and Burgundian influence. Boutet de Monvel's illustration beautifully depicts this significant encounter between Joan and Archangel Michael. The artist skillfully portrays the determination on Joan's face as she receives guidance from her celestial visitor. Clutching a sword symbolizing strength and bravery, she embodies both femininity and heroism. Known as the Maid of Orleans, Joan of Arc became an iconic figure in history—a peasant girl turned military leader who ultimately paid the ultimate price for her unwavering faith. Burnt at the stake by English forces in 1431, she is now recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church and remains a patron saint of France. This remarkable artwork not only showcases Boutet de Monvel's talent but also serves as a reminder of Joan's extraordinary journey—one that continues to inspire people around the world today.
