Photograph, France, 1862.
Born at Butterley Hall Derbyshire, Sir James Outram (1803-1863) is best known for his role during the relief and capture of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), but he had enjoyed a long career as a soldier and political officer in India before this, including service in the 1st Afghan War (1839-1842) and Sind (1842-1843).
In 1854 he was appointed resident at Lucknow and two years carried out the annexation of Oudh, against the wishes of its inhabitants, on behalf of the East India Company. Outram became the first chief commissioner of the new province in which he was to play such a key role during the rising of 1857. Outram received the special thanks of both houses of Parliament for his services in India, but with his health declining he returned to Britain in 1860.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram in civilian clothes during his time in Nice, France in 1862. Born at Butterley Hall Derbyshire, Outram is renowned for his significant role in the relief and capture of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny from 1857 to 1859. However, prior to this event, he had already established a remarkable career as a soldier and political officer in India. Outram's military service included participation in the 1st Afghan War from 1839 to 1842 and the Sind campaign of 1842-1843. In 1854, he was appointed resident at Lucknow and played a crucial part in annexing Oudh against the wishes of its inhabitants on behalf of the East India Company. This led him to become the first chief commissioner of the newly formed province where he would play an instrumental role during the uprising of 1857. For his services rendered in India, Outram received special thanks from both houses of Parliament. However, due to declining health, he returned to Britain in 1860. The photograph showcases him donning civilian attire while enjoying his time abroad. This image provides a glimpse into Lieutenant-General Sir James Outram's life outside military duties—a moment frozen forever that reflects not only his distinguished career but also offers insight into his personal experiences beyond warfare.
