EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving depicts the incredible rescue of Captain John Ross and his crew from the Arctic Ocean in 1833. Stranded for four long winters, many believed them to be lost forever. However, fate had other plans as the 'Isabella' of Hull, the very ship Ross had once commanded in 1818, came to their aid. The astonished crew of the 'Isabella' informed Ross that he had been presumed dead for two years. It was a miraculous reunion that defied all odds and captured the imagination of those back in England who thought they would never see their brave explorers again. In this scene, we witness a moment of triumph amidst the icy waters and towering icebergs of the Arctic Circle. The resilience and determination of these sailors shine through as they are saved from certain peril by their former vessel turned savior. This historical event serves as a reminder of both the dangers and wonders that come with exploration. It is a testament to human ingenuity and endurance in the face of nature's most unforgiving landscapes. The image immortalizes a remarkable chapter in maritime history that continues to inspire awe and admiration centuries later.
