The Flagellation of Christ (detail of the three figures in the foreground) c. 1459

XIR899490 The Flagellation of Christ (detail of the three figures in the foreground) c. 1459 (oil and tempera on panel) by Francesca, Piero della, (c.1415-92); Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Urbino, Italy; (add.info.: La Flagellation du Christ. Detail des trois personnages au premier-plan
After numerous interpretations, The Flagellation has come to be seen as an allegory of the Churchs misfortunes in the face of the threatening Turks and the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Here, the main scene is pushed to the background and it is the three figures on the right that are the main subject of the work. The man on the far right is considered to be a representation of Giovanni Bacci (who is also assumed to be the the person who gave the work to the Duke of Urbino), or the Cardinal Bessarion. The young blond man is thought to be an angel, an allegorical figure or perhaps Buonconte, the young son of Federico of Montefeltro. The figure to the left is a Greek scholar.); Italian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detail of "The Flagellation of Christ" by Piero della Francesca, a renowned Italian artist from the 15th century. The painting, created in 1459 using oil and tempera on panel, is housed in the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino, Italy. In this particular section of the artwork, three figures take center stage. While interpretations have varied over time, it is now widely believed that "The Flagellation" symbolizes the Church's struggles during the threat posed by the Turks and the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Interestingly, rather than focusing on the main scene itself which appears more distant, attention is drawn to these three foreground figures. On the far right stands a man often identified as Giovanni Bacci or Cardinal Bessarion – both significant historical figures associated with this period. Adjacent to him is a young blond man who could be an angelic figure or allegorical representation. Some speculate that he might even represent Buonconte, Federico of Montefeltro's young son. Completing this trio is a Greek scholar positioned on their left side. Each character adds depth and intrigue to Piero della Francesca's masterpiece. This stunning print allows art enthusiasts to appreciate every intricate detail captured within this section of "The Flagellation". It offers viewers an opportunity to delve into history and explore various symbolic meanings embedded within one remarkable painting.
