Snow in Mountain Villa, from an album of 12 leaves, 1723 (ink & colour on paper)
6124981 Snow in Mountain Villa, from an album of 12 leaves, 1723 (ink & colour on paper) by Jin Yongxi (fl.1695-1723); 65.9x39.2 cm; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; (add.info.: Jin Yongxi, a literati painter from Suzhou, was a pupil of the orthodox master Wang Yuanqi (1642-1715). Each leaf of this exceptionally large album is inspired by a past master of the Song (960-1279) or Yuan (1280-1368) literati tradition. Jin has inscribed the name of the artist that inspired each of his compositions. Although Jins paintings vary considerably from their sources, they do capture the essential style associated with the famous painters he emulates. While working in Beijing, Jin apparently had access to the imperial collection which accounts for his broad and accurate knowledge of historical styles of painting. The Qinglai pavilion in which the artist painted this album likely belonged go the literatus, Gao Shiqi (1645-1703), a high official and secretary to the emperor. A major collector, Gao may in fact have commissioned the album.); Photo: © Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; Gift of Ruth and Bruce Dayton

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Snow in Mountain Villa" is part of a remarkable album consisting of 12 leaves, created by Jin Yongxi in 1723. The artwork, measuring 65.9x39.2 cm, can be found at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, USA. Jin Yongxi was an accomplished literati painter from Suzhou and a student of the renowned master Wang Yuanqi. Each leaf within this expansive album draws inspiration from past masters belonging to the Song and Yuan literati traditions. Jin pays homage to these artists by inscribing their names on each composition. Despite incorporating his own unique style into his paintings, Jin successfully captures the essence associated with the famous painters he emulates. His extensive knowledge of historical painting styles can be attributed to his access to the imperial collection while working in Beijing. The Qinglai pavilion, where Jin painted this exquisite album, is believed to have belonged to Gao Shiqi—a literatus and high-ranking official who served as secretary to the emperor during that time period. It is possible that Gao commissioned this album due to his passion for collecting art. This particular print showcases a serene winter scene enveloped in snow-covered mountains surrounding a villa nestled amidst nature's tranquility. Its delicate ink and color on paper technique beautifully portrays both realism and artistic expression. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts acquired this exceptional piece through a generous gift from Ruth and Bruce Dayton.
