EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "Peik, c. 1708" transports us back to the exotic world of the Ottoman Empire in the early 18th century. The print depicts Peik, a Page of the Sultan, faithfully following his master on foot as he ventures abroad. Created by Jean Baptiste Vanmour and engraved by Philippe Simonneau, this artwork is part of a collection called "Receuil de Cent Estampes representante differentes Nations du Levant" or "Collection of One Hundred Prints Representing the Different Nations of the Levant". This ambitious project was initiated by Charles de Ferriol, who served as French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1699 to 1711. The image showcases Peik's elaborate attire and accessories that reflect both his status and cultural heritage. He wears an ornate headdress adorned with feathers and dons traditional Turkish garments complete with intricate patterns. A dagger hangs from his waist while a spear rests against an archway in the background. Through this print, we catch a glimpse into Eastern fashion and courtly life during that era. It exemplifies Orientalism - a fascination with Eastern cultures prevalent among European artists at that time. Preserved in private collections today, this remarkable piece offers us an opportunity to appreciate historical costumes and gain insight into cross-cultural interactions between Europe and Turkey during one of history's most intriguing periods – all through Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder platform.
