Riverside Retreat, c. 1250 (ink & colour on silk)
6199661 Riverside Retreat, c.1250 (ink & colour on silk) by Xia Sen (fl.c.1250); 24.9x25.4 cm; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; (add.info.: This fan painting is signed Xia Sen on the earthen bank just below and to the right of the roots of the large tree extending from the left margin of the picture. Born the son of the famous academy painter Xia Gui (c. early 1200s), Xia Sen continued his fathers innovative style. The intimate, focused view of nature, clearly rendered motifs, low-angle perspective, and evocation of a coherent space are all characteristics of the painting circle of Xia Gui. The compositional emphasis of one side of the picture over the other creates pictorial tension and interest. This so-called " one-corner" composition, in which the subjects of the painting are pushed to a corner or a side, attributed to Ma Yuan (late 12th-early 13th century) and Xia Gui, came to characterize Southern Song academy painting, and the device was practiced by a wide variety of contemporary artists.); © Minneapolis Institute of Art; Gift of Ruth and Bruce Dayton

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artwork titled "Riverside Retreat" by Xia Sen, dating back to approximately 1250. Created using ink and color on silk, this masterpiece measures 24.9x25.4 cm and is currently housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in Minnesota, USA. Xia Sen, son of renowned academy painter Xia Gui from the early 1200s, skillfully carried forward his father's innovative style in this painting. The viewer is treated to an intimate and focused view of nature, with meticulously rendered motifs that bring the scene to life. The artist's use of a low-angle perspective adds depth and dimension to the composition. One striking feature of this artwork is its "one-corner" composition technique attributed to Ma Yuan and Xia Gui themselves. By pushing the subjects towards one corner or side of the picture, a sense of pictorial tension and interest is created. This approach became characteristic of Southern Song academy painting during that era. The Riverside Retreat transports us into a coherent space where we can immerse ourselves in serene natural beauty while appreciating Xia Sen's mastery as an artist. Its delicate brushwork combined with harmonious colors evokes a sense of tranquility that captivates viewers even centuries later. Thanks to Bridgeman Images for preserving this remarkable piece through their fine art finder platform so that it can be admired by art enthusiasts worldwide for generations to come.
