The area attracted visitors such as Thomas Allom because of its many ruined ancient Roman towns. These include Ephesus, capital of Asia Minor in the Roman period. Thomas Allom made very extensive journeys abroad. His views of Asia Minor were included in volumes of engravings published in 1837. Views of faraway places were very popular at this time. Allom was a London artist.
