EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Indian Redstart. The Thorn-tailed Indian Lizard" a beautifully colored engraving created by George Edwards in the years 1749-73. The artwork, now part of a private collection, is an exquisite example of nature illustration from the 18th century. Originally engraved by Edwards himself for his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular piece was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, a German artist and art dealer from Nuremberg. Seligmann combined Edwards' plates with the work of Mark Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" translating names into German and adding additional figures and plants not present in the originals. "The Indian Redstart" depicts Ruticilla bengalensis, also known as the Indian redstart bird, perched on a branch alongside a thorn-tailed lizard. The intricate details captured in this engraving highlight both the beauty and diversity found within our natural world. This print serves as a testament to the historical significance of scientific illustrations during that era while showcasing the talent and skill possessed by artists like George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. It is truly an enchanting piece that allows us to appreciate both artistry and nature simultaneously.
