Irises, one of a pair of six-fold screens, 1700s (ink & colour on gilded paper)

3550737 Irises, one of a pair of six-fold screens, 1700s (ink & colour on gilded paper) by Shiko, Watanabe (1683-1755); 168.8x373.2 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: The subject of this painting comes from a 10th-century narrative poem. It tells of a young noblemans journey into the distant countryside, far from the cluttered environment of the capital (Kyoto). There he came upon a small stream, the banks of which were covered with blooming iris plants. A simple eight-plank bridge allowed travelers to admire the beauty of this natural site. While viewing the beautiful flowers the nobleman composed a poem: I have a beloved wife, Familiar as the skirt of a well-worn robe, And so this distant journeying Fills my heart with grief. Earlier compositions depicting this scene included the wooden footbridge, supports and flower stalks. Here the artist has allowed the imagination of the viewer to " fill in" the scene.); Gift of the Norweb Foundation; Japanese, out of copyright

Irises, one of a pair of six-fold screens

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that showcases the exquisite beauty and artistic prowess of Shiko Watanabe. Created in the 1700s, this ink and color on gilded paper artwork measures an impressive 168.8x373.2 cm and can be found at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. The painting draws inspiration from a 10th-century narrative poem, depicting a young nobleman's journey into the serene countryside far away from Kyoto's bustling capital. As he stumbles upon a small stream adorned with blooming iris plants, his heart fills with grief for being separated from his beloved wife. Unlike earlier compositions featuring wooden footbridges and flower stalks, Shiko Watanabe invites viewers to engage their imagination by leaving out these elements. This deliberate choice allows us to immerse ourselves fully in the scene as we envision our own version of this idyllic setting. The intricate details and vibrant colors used by Watanabe bring life to each delicate petal while capturing the essence of nature's splendor. The golden hues add an air of opulence to the piece, elevating it beyond mere representation. This remarkable artwork has been generously gifted to the Cleveland Museum of Art by the Norweb Foundation. Its timeless beauty continues to captivate art enthusiasts worldwide as they marvel at its harmonious composition and poetic storytelling through brushstrokes.
