EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a rare moment in history - the meeting of Dr. Saw Po Min, his son, and the majestic Albino/White Elephant Pawah at London Zoo in May 1926. The image showcases the immense size and beauty of this unique creature as it stands proudly beside its caretakers. Pawah, born in the wild in 1918, had embarked on an extraordinary journey from Taungoo, Burma to America where it was destined to be leased to John Ringling, a renowned American circus director. Dr. Saw Po Min, President of the Loyal Karen Association of Burma, accompanied Pawah along with several attendants on this remarkable expedition. The photograph offers a glimpse into a time when such encounters were truly awe-inspiring and filled with wonder. The contrast between the elephant's pure white coat and its dark surroundings adds to the ethereal quality of this image. Frederick William Bond skillfully captured this historical moment for posterity through his lens. His photography allows us to appreciate not only the physical grandeur of these magnificent creatures but also their cultural significance during that era. As we gaze upon this print today, we are reminded of both our fascination with exotic animals and our responsibility towards their conservation. This photograph serves as a timeless reminder that every living being deserves respect and protection in our ever-changing world.
