EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the front and reverse of a promotional card for the drink Chicoree a la Bergere. Created by the French School in the 19th century, this color lithograph offers a charming glimpse into life in Wales around 1890. On the front, we are treated to delightful depictions of Welsh culture and traditions. A couple dressed in traditional Welsh costumes and hats can be seen riding on horseback, exuding an air of elegance and heritage. Accompanying them are carol singers spreading joy through their melodious tunes, as well as a fisherman carrying his coracle on his back. Flipping over to the reverse side reveals an informative description of Wales itself - its geography, customs, traditions, and even mentions the famous Eisteddfod festival. This promotional card served not only as an advertisement for Chicoree a la Bergere but also as an educational tool about this enchanting country. Chicoree became immensely popular in France after Napoleon's blockade disrupted coffee imports from Britain in 1806. The roasted chicory plant produced a beverage that resembled coffee or could be added to it. Even today, it remains beloved in France both as a standalone drink or as an additive to coffee or cooking. This particular drink was grown and produced extensively during the 19th century in northern France's Pas-de-Calais region at Haubourdin's Emile Blonzel factory. As part of a private collection now available through Bridgeman Images, this print captures not just advertising history but also provides us with glimpses into cultural exchange between nations during that era.
