Hoisting Nelson's Signal on Trafalgar Day, HMS "Victory" (colour photo)

8669212 Hoisting Nelson's Signal on Trafalgar Day, HMS "Victory" (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Hoisting Nelson's Signal on Trafalgar Day, HMS "Victory." 21 October is one of the most significant dates in British naval history, for it was on that day in 1805 that the British fleet under Lord Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets off Cape Trafalgar. At the commencement of the action, in which he received fatal wounds, Nelson hoisted his famous signal: "England expects that every man this day will do his duty." In commemoration of the man and the occasion, the historic signal is flown on Trafalgar Day on board HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship, now preserved in Portsmouth Dockyard. Our picture shows the signal being hoisted by seamen dressed in the style of 1805.
