EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from the 19th century titled "Amateur Bee-Keeping" captures a moment of both charm and misfortune. In this scene, we witness an unlucky man who has been stung on the face by a bee. His expression reveals slight pain and surprise as he awkwardly tries to deal with the sting. Despite his unfortunate encounter, there is a sense of joyousness in the air as dogs frolic around him. The setting is idyllic, with a picturesque sunrise illuminating the backdrop of this household's beekeeping activities. The man's attempt at apiculture seems to have attracted quite a swarm, which can be heard buzzing in the distance. It appears that his purchase of bees has not gone according to plan, as they disperse around him like an unexpected shower. Seeking refuge from further stings, our amateur beekeeper dexterously uses water from a jug to rid himself of any lingering bees. His friends follow suit, syringing water onto their own faces in hopes of avoiding similar encounters. Despite these comical mishaps, there is an undeniable allure to this scene - an appreciation for nature's wonders and the company of loyal pets. This print reminds us that even in moments when things don't go exactly as planned, there is still beauty and laughter to be found in life's little surprises.
