In 1930 he was second in list of winning jockeys, being beaten by one by Fred Fox. His record season was 1933, when he rode 259 winners, beating by 13 the previous record made by Fred Archer in 1885. Another feature of his 1933 success was the riding of 12 consecutive winners. Gordon Richards was born in Shropshire in May 1904, and was apprenticed to M Hartigan in 1919. He rode his first winner on 21 March 1921. Although he has been Champion Jockey for so many years, he has still to ride the winner of the Derby. This print captures the legendary Gordon Richards, a Champion Jockey who dominated the horse racing world in the 1920s and 1930s. Born in Shropshire in May 1904, Richards began his career as an apprentice to M Hartigan before quickly rising to fame as one of the greatest jockeys of his time.
Throughout his illustrious career, Richards claimed the title of Champion Jockey an impressive nine times, winning numerous races and setting records that stood for decades. In 1933, he achieved a record-breaking season by riding an incredible 259 winners, surpassing even the great Fred Archer's previous record.
One remarkable highlight of Richards' success was when he rode an astonishing 12 consecutive winners in a single season. Despite all his achievements on the racetrack, there was one elusive victory that remained out of reach for him - winning the prestigious Derby.
