EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the distinguished Victoria Cross awarded to Captain Reginald William Sartorius, a valiant soldier of the 6th Regiment of Bengal Cavalry. The image captures the essence of bravery and honor that this prestigious medal represents. Captain Sartorius, born on the Isle of Wight in 1841, proved his mettle during various military campaigns. He fought gallantly in the Indian Mutiny and served with distinction in the Bhutan War. However, it was during the 2nd Ashanti War in present-day Ghana where he displayed exceptional courage that earned him this esteemed recognition. On January 17th, 1874, at Abogoo, amidst heavy enemy fire, Captain Sartorius selflessly rescued a wounded comrade. This act of heroism solidified his place among those who have gone above and beyond for their fellow soldiers. The photograph also sheds light on Captain Sartorius' illustrious career beyond this particular conflict. He later participated in the 2nd Afghan War alongside his brother Euston - both recipients of Victoria Crosses. Regrettably, Captain Reginald William Sartorius passed away on August 8th, 1907 back on his beloved Isle of Wight. Nevertheless, his legacy lives on through this remarkable portrait and serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication to duty and valorous spirit. Displayed within a medal group belonging to Major General Reginald William Sartorius himself at London's National Army Museum; this print is an evocative reminder of one man's extraordinary contributions to history.
