EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the intense and tragic moment of Alexander Pushkin's duel with Georges d Anthes. Painted by Alexander Avvakumovich Naumov in 1884, this oil on canvas artwork is housed at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, Russia. The story behind this powerful image begins with jealousy and pride. Pushkin, a renowned poet, became consumed by envy when he noticed the attention his wife received from Georges-Charles de Heeckeren d Anthes. In response to his emotions, Pushkin wrote an abusive letter to d Anthes' adoptive father. Refusing to retract his hurtful words, d Anthes challenged Pushkin to a duel as a means of defending his honor. Tragically, on January 27th, 1837, during their fateful encounter in the snow-covered woodland depicted in this painting, d Anthes fatally shot Pushkin. The composition portrays the somber atmosphere of impending doom and highlights various elements that symbolize honor and combat: a sledge waiting nearby with horses harnessed for escape or assistance if needed; both men standing tall and determined; Pushkin draped in a cloak signifying vulnerability yet resilience. Naumov's brushstrokes skillfully convey the tension between these two adversaries locked in mortal combat. The artist masterfully captures not only physical struggle but also emotional turmoil - jealousy turning into tragedy before our eyes. This print serves as a poignant reminder of how unchecked emotions can lead to devastating consequences
