EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Porto di Ripetta in 1833, showcasing the bustling river trade and baroque architecture of Rome. The etching with brown wash technique used by Agostino Tofanelli brings out the intricate details of this historic port. Engraved by Pietro Fontana, this artwork is part of the Recueil des vues au bister dessinees et lavees par Callimachus collection, which documents antiquities and curiosities of Rome during Pope Pius VII's papacy. The Porto di Ripetta, designed by Alessandro Specchi in 1707, was a hub for commerce and transportation along the Tiber River. In this image, we see porters unloading goods from boats while a tugboat maneuvers through the water. Carriages line up on the facade as merchants transport their produce to market. Atop the steps leading to San Girolamo degli Schiavoni church stands proudly, its presence adding an air of grandeur to this vibrant scene. Although no longer existing today, this engraving allows us to glimpse into a time when trade thrived at Porto di Ripetta. The Stapleton Collection has preserved this remarkable piece from Italian history that showcases not only architectural beauty but also highlights the importance of river transport and commerce in ancient Rome. This print serves as a reminder of our rich past and how it continues to shape our present-day understanding of art and culture.
