EDITORS COMMENTS
In this iconic photo print, taken during the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics, Yukio Kasaya is seen celebrating his historic win as Japan's first-ever Winter Olympic gold medalist in ski jumping. The atmosphere at the Miyanomori Jump Hill is electric as Kasaya stands triumphantly on the shoulders of his compatriot and silver medalist Seiji Aochi, with Norway's Ingolf Mork joining in the jubilation despite finishing fourth. This image captures a moment of pure joy and national pride for Japan, as they achieved an unprecedented clean-sweep victory in ski jumping. Not since the Norwegian team accomplished this feat in 1948 had any country managed to secure all three medals in this discipline. As such, Kasaya's gold medal represents a significant milestone not only for him but also for Japanese winter sports history. The photograph perfectly encapsulates the camaraderie between these athletes from different nations who share a common passion for their sport. It serves as a testament to the power of sportsmanship and unity that transcends borders and brings people together. Taken by Colorsport photographer Stewart Fraser on February 6th, 1972, during the XI Olympic Winter Games held in Sapporo, this image immortalizes an unforgettable moment that will forever be etched into sporting history.
