Hungary goalkeeper Gyula Grosics makes a save against England at Wembley in 1953
Football - 1953 / 1954 season - England 3 Hungary 6
Hungary goalkeeper Gyula Grosics jumps to make a save, with Englands Stan Mortensen, right, at Wembley. Jozsef Zakarias and Jeno Buzanszky are in the background.
The British press referred to it as the " Match of the Century" - the originators of the game, against the finest team in the world at that time, the Magical Magyars. However Englands were defeated at home for the first time to a side from outside of the British Isles, and were shown to be technically and tactically inferior to the Hungarian side. The result led to a review of the antiquated training and tactics used by the England team, and the subsequent adoption of continental practices at an international and club level in the English game.
