EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Alastair John is captured mid-action during his debut match for Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. The year was 1983, and the Seagulls were playing host to Coventry City at the Goldstone Ground. The atmosphere was electric as the team, then in the Second Division, looked to secure another crucial victory. John, a young and promising defender, was making his first appearance for the club after joining from non-league side Worthing. His arrival was met with great anticipation by the fans, who saw in him a player with the potential to make a significant impact on the team. As the game progressed, John proved himself more than capable of holding his own against the experienced Coventry attack. His composure on the ball, strong tackling, and ability to read the game were all on full display as he helped to keep a clean sheet for Brighton. The photograph captures a moment of intense focus from John as he watches the ball being played forward by a teammate. His expression is one of determination and concentration, a testament to the mental fortitude that would come to define his career. With the sun setting behind him, casting a warm glow over the pitch, the image is a poignant reminder of the beauty and drama of the beautiful game. John went on to make over 150 appearances for Brighton, becoming a fan favorite and a key member of the team that would help to secure promotion to the First Division in 1983. His debut marked the beginning of a successful career that would see him play for several other clubs in the Football League, including Millwall and Crystal Palace. Today, he is fondly remembered by Albion fans as a true Seagull, and this photograph serves as a lasting tribute to his debut performance.
