EDITORS COMMENTS
Capturing the thrill of speed and innovation, this vintage print showcases Kenelm Lee Guinness fearlessly maneuvering his Sunbeam through the treacherous Ramsey Hairpin during the 1908 RAC Tourist Trophy. As a member of the renowned brewing family, Guinness's passion for racing was matched only by his ingenuity as an inventor. It was during the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy in 1912 that he experienced a pivotal moment - frustrated with his spark plug's performance, he resolved to create a superior alternative, leading to the invention of the KLG plug. However, tragedy struck at the Gran Premio de Sam Sebastian on Circuit de Lafarge when an accident claimed both Guinness's riding mechanic Barrett and left him seriously injured. This devastating incident prompted significant changes in racing regulations, ultimately resulting in a ban on riding mechanics. Thomas Barrett tragically became known as the last riding mechanic to lose their life in competition. This print not only immortalizes Guinness's daring spirit but also serves as a poignant reminder of how motorsport history can be shaped by both triumphs and heart-wrenching losses. Let this image transport you back to an era where pioneers like Kenelm Lee Guinness pushed boundaries and paid heavy prices for their pursuit of speed.
