A weyschuit being hauled ashore in a crowded harbour, c.1672 (graphite)
7341551 A weyschuit being hauled ashore in a crowded harbour, c.1672 (graphite) by Velde, Willem van de, the Elder (1611-93); 44.3x86.7 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Elder
In the right foreground is a broadside view of a weyschuit (a small Dutch open boat) being hauled ashore near a pier. In the centre people are being carried ashore from a barge and to the right two barges are pulling away with two others landing on the pier. On the right is a stern view of an admiral's ship and to her left a states yacht is under sail. In the middle distance a variety of shipping is at anchor, including a vice-admiral's ship in the centre. There is some doubt as to the date and attribution of this large drawing which has been broadly drawn in thick graphite and fluid wash. The composition, with the flagship and weyschuit boldly massed on one side, is in the manner of the Younger but parts of the drawing seem a little clumsy. The paper, however, is a course type which the van de Veldes used in 1672.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning graphite print captures the bustling activity of a crowded harbour in 1672, as a weyschuit is being hauled ashore by a group of sailors. The scene is alive with movement and detail, from people being carried ashore from a barge to various ships at anchor in the middle distance.
The artist, Willem van de Velde, the Elder, expertly conveys the energy and chaos of maritime life during this time period. The broadside view of the weyschuit in the foreground draws the viewer's eye immediately, while other elements such as an admiral's ship and states yacht add depth to the composition.
Despite some doubts about its date and attribution, this large drawing showcases van de Velde's skillful use of thick graphite and fluid wash techniques. The paper used in this piece aligns with materials commonly used by van de Velde in 1672, further supporting its authenticity.
Overall, this print offers a fascinating glimpse into Dutch naval history and serves as a testament to van de Velde's talent for capturing intricate maritime scenes with precision and flair. It is truly a masterpiece worth admiring for both art lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
