EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a troop guidon belonging to the Ringwood Light Dragoons Yeomanry Cavalry of Hampshire, dating back to 1802-1814. What makes this guidon particularly remarkable is that the embroidress responsible for its creation, M. A. Cleeves, has left her signature on the work. The reverse side of the guidon proudly displays the inscription: "This standard was worked by M A Cleeves" while on the front it states that it was presented by her on October 22nd, 1802. Despite its age, traces of the original design are still visible on this historic piece. Notably, painted shamrock leaves represent an enduring symbol of Irish heritage. Additionally, M. A. Cleeves skillfully incorporated a royal coat of arms and monogram into her embroidery work alongside two majestic horses. The Ringwood Light Dragoons were a single troop cavalry unit established in 1798 with a rich history tied to Hampshire's military tradition. This trove from their past now resides at the National Army Museum in London. Through this photograph print captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, viewers can appreciate not only the craftsmanship and attention to detail exhibited in this guidon but also gain insights into women's contributions within society during this era. It serves as a testament to both historical significance and artistic excellence within military heraldry.
