EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the frontispiece from Robert Burton's 'The Anatomy of Melancholy' in London, originally published in 1621. The intricate illustration showcases the various manifestations of melancholy, ranging from a youth in love to a maniac in chains, and from a lover of solitude to a hypochondriac. At the bottom of the image, botanical illustrations of Borage and Helleborus niger are depicted - with the latter being used as a purgative in treating melancholic symptoms.
