Inverlochy (oil on canvas)
1213199 Inverlochy (oil on canvas) by McCulloch, Horatio (1805-67); 91.8x70.8 cm; Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK; (add.info.: Horatio Mccullough was among the earliest Scottish artists to romanticise his native scenery. His preferred subject matter - castles, lochs, wild glens and mountains - was inspired ultimately by the romantic novels of the great Scottish early 19th century novelist, Sir Walter Scott. As the century progressed, increasing numbers of tourists visited the Scottish Highlands in search of the type of scenery found in Scotts novels. Here, the suggestion of a misty day in the Highlands is appealing, but the rather - stage like setting for the castle shows that McCulloch still relied on the rather artificial conventions of earlier landscape painting.); eTyne & Wear Archives & Museums; Scottish, out of copyright

Inverlochy
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil on canvas painting by Scottish artist Horatio McCulloch, showcasing his romanticized vision of the stunning Scottish Highlands. Measuring 91.8x70.8 cm, this artwork is housed in the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK. McCulloch was one of the earliest Scottish artists to find inspiration in his native landscapes and sought to capture their beauty on canvas. Influenced by the works of renowned novelist Sir Walter Scott, he often depicted castles, lochs, wild glens, and mountains - elements that attracted an increasing number of tourists to the Scottish Highlands during the 19th century. This particular piece portrays a misty day in Inverlochy with its enchanting castle as the focal point. While McCulloch aimed for realism in depicting nature's grandeur, he still relied on traditional artistic conventions prevalent at that time. The painting transports viewers to a remote and picturesque riverbank scene where a charming bridge connects two realms. The composition exudes a sense of tranquility and invites contemplation amidst Scotland's rugged beauty. "Inverlochy" stands as both an homage to Scotland's rich history and natural wonders while also reflecting McCulloch's mastery as a landscape painter. It serves as a testament to his ability to evoke emotions through artistry and captivate audiences with scenes from this beloved region.
