Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. EDITORS COMMENTS
The print titled "North, Central and Eastern Europe, from the series Where Our Exports Go, 1927" captures a vibrant snapshot of trade relations in the early 20th century. Created by William Grimmond and commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board, this colourful lithograph showcases the significant export market for British goods in Northern Central and Eastern Europe during January to June 1927. With an impressive figure of £47 million worth of British goods purchased by over 300 million people in these regions, the image highlights the economic impact of Britain's trade with its European neighbors. The poster is part of Manchester Art Gallery's collection of artist-designed posters that were commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. These posters aimed to promote sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made products across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. While they depict strong images showcasing various aspects of the Empire such as its people, places, and products, they also raise important questions about the legacy of imperialism today. Acquired in the 1930s by Manchester Art Gallery, this particular print serves as a fascinating historical artifact that sheds light on past commercial relationships while prompting reflection on contemporary issues surrounding empire. With over 200 posters in their possession from this campaign alone, Manchester Art Gallery offers a unique opportunity to explore both visually striking artwork and complex narratives tied to colonialism's enduring effects.
