EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Louise de Savoie, also known as Louise of Savoy (1476-1531), a prominent figure in French history. She was the Duchess of Angouleme and the mother of King Francis I of France. The portrait, created by Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard (1825-1902) and handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard himself, beautifully captures her regal presence. Louise de Savoie is depicted wearing an exquisite gown that reflects the fashion trends of the 16th century. The attention to detail in this illustration is remarkable, with every fold and embellishment meticulously rendered. The lithography work by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie further enhances the depth and richness of colors. This image comes from Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867 as a continuation of Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's earlier series on costumes from previous centuries. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard's talent shines through not only in this illustration but also in his contributions as an artist, book illustrator, and interior designer for public buildings and churches throughout his career. With its historical significance and artistic excellence captured within this photo print, it serves as a testament to both Louise de Savoie's influential role during her time and to the skillful craftsmanship involved in creating such masterpieces.
