Seated Figure, Oaxaca, 300 BC-700 AD (ceramic)

3822508 Seated Figure, Oaxaca, 300 BC-700 AD (ceramic) by Zapotec; 32.2x17.9x18.8 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: The most famous Zapotec tomb ceramics are elaborate figural urns flanked by smaller, simpler companions similar to this one. Like other companions, this example probably belonged to a set of nearly identical figures; two others remain in Mexico. The identity of ceramic tomb figures-whether elite humans, royal ancestors, or deities-is still debated. The Zapotec developed one of Mesoamericas earliest writing systems, evidenced by the hieroglyphs on the headdress and chest. These are the names of calendar days, " 13 Water" and " 13 Flint Knife, " respectively. Because people were named after the day on which they were born, one hieroglyph may identify the figure.); Gift of the Hanna Fund; Mexican, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable ceramic artifact known as the "Seated Figure, Oaxaca". Created by the Zapotec civilization between 300 BC and 700 AD, this terracotta figure stands at an impressive height of 32.2 centimeters. The Zapotec people were renowned for their intricate tomb ceramics, often featuring elaborate figural urns accompanied by smaller companions like this one. It is believed that this particular figure was part of a set with two other nearly identical figures that still reside in Mexico. The true identity of these ceramic tomb figures remains a subject of debate among scholars. Some suggest they may represent elite humans, royal ancestors, or even deities. The hieroglyphs adorning the headdress and chest provide further intrigue to their purpose. These glyphs are actually names of calendar days - "13 Water" and "13 Flint Knife" respectively - indicating that individuals were named after the day they were born. As we marvel at this ancient artwork from Mesoamerica, it is worth noting that the Zapotec civilization played a significant role in early writing systems within the region. This sculpture serves as tangible evidence of their advanced culture and artistic prowess. Currently housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this gift from the Hanna Fund allows us to appreciate not only its historical significance but also its aesthetic beauty. Let us immerse ourselves in the rich heritage preserved within this seated figure's stylized form and explore our fascination with pre-Columbian artistry.
