EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Fos. 11v-12r Chart 3: Indian Ocean, a remarkable piece of art from the Portolan atlas of the world created by Battista Agnese in Venice around 1542-46. Measuring at 17.8x12.8 cm, this exquisite work is part of a private collection. The chart depicts the coasts of Africa, the Middle East, India, and China within its intricate design. Notably, eight windheads are labeled in German language, adding an intriguing element to this masterpiece. A closer examination reveals that this atlas consists of 30 leaves and is complete in its entirety. The pages are meticulously written and illuminated with narrow gilt frames on one side only while leaving the reverse blank. Battista Agnese's skillful calligraphic cursive hand can be seen through the dedication written in black ink. Additionally, a three-column declination table features figures highlighted in red and black ink along with Roman capitals for country names. What truly sets this portolan atlas apart are its stunning visual elements. It includes full-page coat-of-arms dedications as well as an armillary sphere and double-page Zodiac illustrations. Most notably, there are twelve double-page map charts adorned with gold and colors throughout. From blue or green coastlines to gold land masses and rhumb lines in red and black ink - every detail has been carefully executed by Agnese's masterful hand. Compass roses heightened with gold add further elegance while windheads appear in shades of blue, pink, and gold. Overall, Fos. 11v-12r Chart 3: Indian Ocean stands as a testament to Battista Agnese's cartographic expertise during his time period when he accurately mapped American discoveries made by Marcos de Niza (1531-39) and Francisco de Ulloa (1539-40). This photograph beautifully captures the intricate details and vibrant colors of this historical masterpiece.
