Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by St. Michael's Press Ltd for HMSO
Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers.
Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Honey, from the series Buy New Zealand Produce" by Frank Newbould takes us back to a time when art was used as a tool for propaganda. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by St. Michael's Press Ltd for HMSO, this piece is part of Manchester Art Gallery's remarkable collection of artist-designed posters. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, the British government sought to promote sales of products grown and made within their empire. The Empire Marketing Board launched a poster campaign aimed at encouraging Britons to become conscious consumers of empire goods. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s, showcasing powerful images that depicted people, places, and products from across the empire. However, viewing these posters through a contemporary lens raises challenging questions about the legacies of colonialism. While they may evoke nostalgia or admiration for their artistic merit, they also remind us of uncomfortable beliefs associated with imperialism. In this particular print, we see an exquisite depiction of honey produced in New Zealand. The vibrant colors and meticulous details capture our attention instantly. It serves as a reminder not only of Britain's historical relationship with its colonies but also prompts reflection on how those relationships continue to shape our world today. As we admire this artwork from Fine Art Finder's Bridgeman Images collection at Manchester Art Gallery, it invites us to contemplate both its beauty and its complex historical context—a testament to art's ability to provoke thought and spark conversations about our shared past.
